FC Porto overturned a half-time deficit to win 2-1 at SC Braga on Saturday, a result that reflected the visitors' superior efficiency in front of goal and their ability to generate the better chances despite having far less of the ball. The Lemeister model had forecast a tightly-contested match, giving Porto a 35% win probability and Braga 34%, a projection that in the end slightly undersold the visitors' clinical edge.
The opening hour was a study in possession without incision for the hosts. Braga commanded 62% of the ball and completed 428 passes at an 87% accuracy rate, but they managed only six total shots and, crucially, just one shot on target across the 90 minutes. That single shot on target did find the net, when R. Zalazar converted from the penalty spot in the 54th minute. The penalty was the only time Braga truly tested the Porto goalkeeper, who registered zero saves for the match. Despite their territorial dominance, Braga's expected goals total of 0.99 indicates they created only just under one goal's worth of chances from all their play, with their four shots from inside the box largely lacking conviction.
Porto, by contrast, were far more direct and incisive. They attempted 12 total shots, three of which were on target, and posted an expected goals figure of 1.19 from just 38% possession and 297 passes. The visitors' two goals came from those shots on target. William Gomes equalised in the 69th minute, assisted by O. Pietuszewski, and S. Fofana put Porto ahead in the 80th minute with an unassisted strike. Those two goals were the product of a team that used its fewer possessions to greater effect, getting seven of its 12 shots inside the penalty area. Porto also won five corners to Braga's three, adding further pressure from set pieces.
The match was a fractious contest reflected in the card count. There were nine yellow cards in total, five of which went to Porto and four to Braga. Gustaf Lagerbielke, Sikou Niakaté, and Rodrigo Zalazar were all booked for the hosts, while Alan Varela, Gabri Veiga, Pablo Rosario, Terem Moffi, and Seko Fofana all saw yellow for the visitors. Jean-Baptiste Gorby received his caution for Braga in the sixth minute of stoppage time. Both sides used all five of their permitted substitutions, indicating a tactical battle that went the distance.
Individually, Seko Fofana was the standout performer with a match rating of 7.9, capping his display with the winning goal. William Gomes also impressed, scoring once and earning a 7.7 rating. For Braga, Florian Grillitsch posted a 7.3, while Sikou Niakaté and Rodrigo Zalazar each finished with 7.2. Porto's Martim Fernandes also registered a 7.0. The defensive statistics show both goalkeepers prevented an identical -0.24 goals, implying they conceded more than the expected goals against them suggested, a figure skewed by the fact that Porto's two non-penalty goals came from chances with measurable xG.
The result strengthens Porto's position in the Primeira Liga title race, as they collected three valuable away points against a direct rival. For Braga, the defeat is a significant setback in their own ambitions for a high finish, as their inability to convert possession into high-quality scoring chances proved decisive against a more clinical Porto side.
