Waldhof Mannheim overturned a half-time deficit to beat Erzgebirge Aue 2-1 at the Carl-Benz Stadion, a result driven by a commanding second-half display that the underlying numbers had suggested was coming. The home side ended the match with 54 per cent possession and created significantly more danger, registering 17 total shots and an expected goals figure of 1.75 against Aue’s 1.16. The Lemeister model had entered the round favouring the visitors at 41 per cent, but Mannheim’s persistence after the interval proved decisive.
The opening goal arrived a minute before the break, against the run of play. Marvin Stefaniak scored for Erzgebirge Aue in the 44th minute, a normal goal with no assist recorded, giving the visitors a lead they had not particularly deserved. At that stage Mannheim had already had the better of the territory and chances, but Aue’s efficiency on a rare opportunity put them ahead. It was a reminder of the away side’s threat, though their overall attacking output was limited: only two shots on target across the 90 minutes.
Mannheim responded swiftly after the restart. In the 50th minute, L. Bierschenk equalised, with Diego Michel providing the assist. The goal rewarded Mannheim’s growing control, and from that point they never looked back. The home side’s pressure intensified, and the decisive moment came deep in stoppage time. Terrence Boyd scored the winner in the 90th minute, assisted by Niklas Hoffmann, completing the turnaround and securing all three points. Neither goal involved any special designation such as a penalty or own goal.
The statistical story is one of dominance that eventually told. Mannheim posted 17 total shots, with five on target, nine off target and three blocked. Ten of those efforts came from inside the box, seven from outside, illustrating a varied and persistent threat. Their 383 passes, completed at 84 per cent, were more than Aue’s 360 at 80 per cent, reflecting superior control in the middle third. Aue, meanwhile, managed 11 shots, eight from inside the box, but only two forced a save, and their goalkeeper was called into action three times. The visitors also committed 12 fouls and collected two yellow cards, for Jannic Ehlers and Luan Simnica, while Mannheim had none.
Terrence Boyd was the standout performer, earning a match rating of 7.9 for his winning contribution. Niklas Hoffmann, who set up the decisive goal, rated 7.5, while Diego Michel, with the assist for the equaliser, scored 7.2. Kushtrim Asallari and Lukas Klünter also impressed for the home side, both above the 7.0 mark at 7.3 and 7.2 respectively. For Aue, Marvin Stefaniak was their highest-rated player with 7.3 for his first-half goal, but he was otherwise isolated in attack.
The result lifts Waldhof Mannheim to 37 points from 30 matches, keeping them in the mid-table fight for stability. Erzgebirge Aue remain on 35 points, their fourth defeat in six league games deepening concerns about a slide towards the relegation places. The Lemeister model had given Aue a 41 per cent chance of victory, with Mannheim at 32 per cent, making the home win a mild upset on paper but one thoroughly justified by the balance of play.
